Spotlight: Sensory Stories by Nicole
A post highlighting an Autistic content creator that has made a positive impact on my life.
Nicole Filippone, who goes by Sensory Stories by Nicole across the internet, is “an adult who grew up with undiagnosed autism and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and the parent of three children who have unique sensory needs.” If you know me personally, this may seem like an odd choice of someone to spotlight because I am (by choice) not a parent, and the only children in my life live very far away from me.
Let that highlight how good Nicole’s content is…that I find a lot of value in it even without the parenting aspect being particularly relevant to my life. To be clear, the bulk of the posts aren’t specifically about parenting, but that is a focus that other Autistic content creators don’t always have.
As an aside, I contemplated buying the children’s books (listed below) for my nephews and niece, but they don’t read books. (I was devastated when they told me. 😭) I am still planning to acquire them for my personal collection in hopes I can convince my brother to set up a video call (or multiple but not getting my hopes up) to read them aloud to my nephews and niece. 🤞

Why are there so many undiagnosed adults who are only now discovering that they are either autistic, adhd, or neurodivergent in some way?
If you are learning about autism for the first time, it's most likely not what you think it is...
What people think autism is VS What autism actually is
If you are pursuing an autism evaluation, please don't reach out to practitioners without first doing some research.
Autism and restricted repetitive behaviors (RRBs).
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD).
Autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder (SPD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), very often overlap.
Did you know that autistic people are more likely to have temperature regulation issues?
Let's talk about the type of anxiety that is specific to autism. "Distinct anxiety"

Rosalee the Seeker: A Sensory Processing Disorder Story
"Rosalee [is] a little girl with a heart as pure as gold and an endless supply of enthusiasm. Rosalee is expressive and passionate about the things she enjoys, things like drawing and creating, singing and playing. Sometimes she does things she’s not supposed to do – but, “not on purpose!” Rosalee has Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and that means she just needs a little bit of help learning certain things, like personal space and organizing herself and her belongings. When Rosalee starts seeing Ms. Kat she learns so many things that help her get the sensory stimulation she needs – and this makes all the difference for Rosalee!
Alexander the Avoider: A Sensory Processing Disorder Story
“If you have or teach a child that seems overly anxious or overwhelmed when it comes to sensory inputs (like sounds, visual stimuli, textures or physical touch, etc.)... there's a pretty good chance they have Sensory Processing Disorder.
I wrote Alexander the Avoider to explain SPD from a child's perspective... to validate and empower them... to give them words to explain their needs... and to help adults better understand and support the children in their lives who struggle because of their SPD.”
Paisley the Perfectionist: A Generalized Anxiety Disorder Story
“Paisley is a little perfectionist with the kindest heart…and this is her story.”
