This is all so real! We used to get a ton of work out of twitter, but it turned into such a cesspool that we switched over to Bluesky which has been a great experience so far. It’s weird to go from 3000 followers to 300, but those 300 are quite fruitful. We’re slowing way down on Instagram, with the goal of exiting it entirely. And no facebook!

I already deleted FB and insta when Zuckerberg gave money to Trump, and changed the rules on his platforms to make spreading disinformation easier. I also deleted my Disney+ account, and once I pay off my Amazon cc I will be deleting that as well. I quit shopping at Target and Walmart and only shop at small local stores, which I am lucky to be able to do.

I was never big on fb or social media in general. As it morphed into a necessity in our day-to-day lives, I was beginning my journey as a mom. I have three beautiful children, fathered by an addict. I just didn’t have time or energy to devote to it.

Despite that, I’ve had almost all of them at one point or another. MySpace, Reddit, vine, fb, ig, x, TT … & now SS & BS.

I can tell you this. I’ve never felt better after spending time on these platforms.

I’ve never felt more secure in myself, or connected to the world around me after binging. I’ll admit, I’m a bit of an outlier in a lot of ways.

But Ive witnessed a lot of destructive patterns in my lifetime. It makes me very wary. To me - Social Media overuse carries a lot of the hallmarks of an abusive or codependent relationship.

I’ve deleted every account but the last three. TT is on its way out.

All of that to say, Social media is absolutely another form of control for the rich, our would-be overlords. The idea has potential to be something really great. But as with everything that is controlled by the greedy, it’s been perverted and twisted into an unrecognizable form.

Any advice on leaving IG? I feel like it’s a collection of memories & journal entries for my family including reels of special moments that can’t be downloaded with the music on them… any advice on saving it or an alternative?

There is a way to download your data before you delete. Also, for other accounts' posts, sometimes there is an option to download the videos. With photos, you'll have to screenshot. But a lot of the videos I tried to download errored out on me, so I eventually gave up trying to save anything from my Saved folders. It just got to the point where I decided it wasn't worth my time to keep trying to save things; I would just rather move on. If it's posts from family you're still in contact with, you could try reaching out to them directly for copies of photos/videos too.

I’m definitely looking for a substitute for Google docs. Last thing I want is for them to own my subversive rants going forward.
